The greatness of servanthood
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ
Jesus: Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal
with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form
of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in
fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death,
even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted
him, and given him a name which is above every name. Philippians
2:5-9
As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as
good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 1 Peter 4:10
When you learn about the person of Jesus, you’ll see how different He
was from the rest of the world. Even though He was God Almighty, who
robed Himself in flesh for our sake (see Matthew 1:21-23), He wasn’t
selfish, He was a servant. His entire life modeled this truth. He was
born in a barn instead of a palace. He entered Jerusalem on a donkey
instead of a large horse, and He washed His followers’ feet, saying,
“I have given you an example to follow: do as I have done to you.” Jesus
gave us a model to follow.
The
model is called servanthood. It’s not about being first, the biggest,
or the best. Servanthood is about serving others. Jesus said, “Whoever
wants to be great among you must be your servant.” It’s as easy or as
tough as this: if you want to be great in God’s eyes, you need to serve.
Think about how you might be a servant. Give it a try and see if you
find God’s reward of greatness. jk
