The Living Dead

"And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross." Colossians 2:13-14

Many people are afraid of facing death, whether in a direct or indirect way. It is the fear of losing someone who you have brought up, who you have done a lot of things with or simply losing someone of whom you are fond of. However, also the thought of no longer being among the living on this earth is pushed aside mainly by those who are younger, and is discomforting to those who are older.

Human beings associate death with the end of the biological life. As soon as a organism is unable to build up a life preserving circulation, or rather, is unable to maintain it, cells, tissues and consequently entire organs will not receive enough oxygen, resulting in life coming to an end.

Although this subject may be considered now and then, most people, however, are not aware that they themselves are dead, that is, they are surrounded by the "living dead". What death are we talking about here? It is most certainly not the biological death which we are all familiar with. Is there another form of death than that which is known to most people? Through the Scripture verse mentioned above, the Bible shows us clearly that all those who are living in sin are dead. Therefore, it is sin which brings ruin and spiritual death.

In the epistle to the Romans, we see that sin is directly linked to death. We also see in the Scripture verse mentioned above and also in the book of Romans, that there is only one who can give life, namely, Jesus Christ. There is only one who is the Life and is capable of making something come alive. In John 11:25+26, Jesus says that he is the Resurrection and the Life.

Due to the fact that Jesus is not a God of the dead and, therefore, there will be no dead in His kingdom, we have to make sure that we become alive. We are in the fortunate situation today to be able to receive forgiveness for our sin, for it is the time of grace. Jesus bore all the sin of the whole of humanity on the cross and was able to overcome them all.

For us today, this means that we can become alive; if we repent, be baptized in His name and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38). Jesus also describes this process as rebirth. In John 3:3, he talks with Nicodemus and shows him the necessity of being born again.

Therefore, do not be a "zombie", who listens to the commands of the dark powers which are ruling this world, but rather, find Jesus and become alive!
