A virtuous man called Joseph - Part 3

Psalm 18:30 – KJV – “As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him. For who is God save the LORD? Or who is a rock save our God? It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect. He maketh my feet like hinds' feet, and setteth me upon my high places.”

The situation was not easy at all for Joseph the carpenter who found himself in a kind of dilemma. He loved his wife but what was happening to her war sort of „abnormal“. Nevertheless, he did not allow doubt to control him. Even though the Lord was giving him some clear instructions concerning the decisions that he was to take concerning his future life as a father and a husband, he could have trusted his own intelligence and his human reasoning and find all kind of reasons not to engage in such an uncertain relationship with Mary. But he laid down his personal honour and his „dignity“ as a man by agreeing to take under his protection a woman who was evidently taking him into a weird adventure.

Even though he received divine instructions, Joseph was asking himself a lot of questions concerning his future life with Mary, but also concerning the child whose conception was so extraordinary. But by faith he obeyed, and God was glorified. What would have happened if Joseph had doubted the word of God? How often do we ask God to speak to us and to reveal Himself to us in a specific and difficult situation? And when He does so, it is not always easy for us to receive His word and obey His instructions because they seem weird. But the Bible tells us in Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV „Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.“

In the story of the nativity, the role played by Joseph the carpenter is oftentimes in the shadow. But if he had not blindly obeyed the words and instructions he received from God, the life of Jesus the saviour of the whole earth could have been at stake. Joseph is a model of obedience, faith, integrity and humility. He is a model of a responsible and caring father who is mindful of the well-being of his family. He is ready to do everything it will take to make sure that his family is secure. He is a man who is not thinking about his own personal interest first and he does not seek to be approved by men. What he desires most is God’s counsel and guidance for his life, no matter the cost.

While the whole world is celebrating once again the birth of the saviour of mankind at the end of this year, let us have a closer look at the life of Joseph the carpenter who played a key role in the birth, education and ministry of Jesus-Christ of Nazareth. May the faith that he demonstrated inspire us in every area of our lives. His presence in Mary’s life was essential considering the difficult circumstances in which she gave birth to the saviour of the world. His role as protector, provider, and his model as a man of integrity have permanently impacted the life of Jesus and have left an eternal imprint in the story of mankind.

May the God of all creation who made heaven and earth bless all His children who are walking by faith and know how to trust Him even in the most difficult circumstances they may be facing. Be blessed at this end of the year and may Jesus Christ grant you a special favour in every area of your life in the new year 2018. mt
