You are the light of
the world |
Matthew 5:14-15 – KJV –
“Ye are the light of the world. A
city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.“
Colossians 1:12 – KJV –
“Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath
made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.”
Everybody agrees on the importance of light. Everything that has
to do with darkness is synonymous for insecurity, uncertainty, fear,
danger and evil. The devil is called the prince of darkness because
he is the father of all evil and of all evil actions that are going
on under the sun. On the other hand, the light is synonymous for warmth,
comfort, security and serenity. The Bible declares that the Light,
which is Jesus Christ, came to shine in the darkness but the darkness
did not receive Him. The darkness is the world that prefers evil rather
than righteousness. But to all those who accept the Light, Jesus-Christ
has given the power to become the children of the living God. They
have the promise of eternal life and they will inherit the kingdom
of God. (John 1: 11-13).
The
children of God are called the children of light because God who has
begotten them is also light. He dwells in the light that no man have
seen nor can see (1 Timothy 6:16). Because God is light, He can only
bring forth light, truth and life. When the Bible says that we are
the light of the world, it is because the Light itself dwells in us
through the Holy Spirit. We are called to have a manner of conduct
and do works that are worthy of that light, so that we will be a source
of inspiration and a blessing for the world that is surrounded with
darkness. When we walk as children of light, our attitude that is
free from any falsehood, wickedness and lie will direct people to
Jesus.
When the Bible says that the whole world is in darkness, it is because
it is ruled by evil powers and sin, and it is in a state of ignorance
that keeps it in the darkness. But if we walk as children of the Light,
and if our actions reflect the nature of the One who has begotten
us, then the whole world will see it and will be enlighten. Thus we
read in Ephesians 5:8 “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now
are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light“. The light
that we carry in us becomes visible when God’s purity, His righteousness,
His love, His forgiveness, His tender mercy and His wisdom become
visible through us. Then the people around us will be touched in their
hearts and will desire that same light. Those that are in the darkness
will be transformed and will experience the salvation that is found
in Jesus Christ.
Even though the moral depravation is so acute in our societies, we
can still be that light that will be a source of inspiration and lead
millions of souls to the everlasting salvation. That is the reason
why the Bible encourages us to “be blameless and harmless, the
sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse
nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world“. (Philippians
2:15)
Let us keep our lights alive, for Christ must continue to live in
us. Moreover, our love for Him must still be fervent and burning until
He returns to take His bride, the Church. mt
