The thirst for God
Psalms 63:1-5 A psalm of David. When he was in
the wilderness of Judah. O God, you are my God; I seek you, my soul
thirsts for you, my flesh faints for you, in a dry and weary land
where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
to see your power and your glory. For your love is better than life;
my lips will praise you. I will bless you as long as I live; I will
lift up my hands in your name.
Verses
1-5 of Psalm 63 express a deep spiritual thirst for God, comparing
this quest to that of a thirsty body in a desert. The text evokes
a burning desire to be in God's sanctuary to express his power and
glory. It also emphasizes that God's faithful love is more precious
than life itself, leading the psalmist to continual and joyful praise.
The author of this psalm is named David. Inspired by the Spirit of
God who created heaven and earth, David expresses a deep desire for
this God while he is in the wilderness of Judah. Far from all comfort
and palace life, he feels a spiritual thirst far greater than physical
thirst.
He says, “O God, you are my God, I seek you; my soul thirsts for
you” (v. 1). This shows that beyond material needs, the human
heart needs the presence of God.
David teaches us here that true communion with the Lord begins with
a sincere desire to know Him and live in His presence. He remembers
the moments spent in the sanctuary contemplating God's glory, and
this prompts him to glorify Him even in solitude.
He declares, “Your loving kindness is better than life, my lips
will praise you” (v. 3). Despite the difficulties, David chooses
to worship. His faith does not depend on circumstances, but on his
intimate relationship with God.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, this Psalm invites us to seek
personal communion with the Lord every day through prayer, meditation,
and praise, for it is there that our soul finds true satisfaction.
And when we taste God's goodness, the only possible response is to
glorify Him with all our hearts. Amen. Brother Daniel Komla Agbavito
